artistic statement

I discover my inspiration through a multitude of outlets, specifically centering around storytelling and musicality. Humanity’s sheer drive to persevere, despite the most difficult circumstances, has always inspired me as a person and therefore bleeds into my artistry. I find a desire to share this innate humanity I witness in my friends, family, and society through storytelling in dance. I do so by first developing a character and further applying their characteristics to movement. Having the ability to express not only my own life experiences, but additionally those of others, provides an added depth to my artistry. Additionally, I am heavily driven by musicality and cultivate performances that are visual representations of the music, while still allowing for dynamic contrasts, to aid in my storytelling.

TEACHING STATEMENT

Giving students’ the tools to be better humans is my main goal in the classroom. I emphasize well-rounded training in a multitude of genres, exposing students to diversity, adaptability, and pushing comfortable boundaries. Balancing physical and mental well-being, and emphasizing the importance of both, is a large priority of mine. I find a balance between command and guided discovery teaching styles, including the gradient of styles between. This allows students to follow precisely, while simultaneously making movement their own. I emphasize critical thinking skills by prompting students with questions to train their minds as well as their bodies. I also have a set lesson-plan that outlines an objective for each week, which I share with my students, expecting us to work collaboratively together throughout training.
